ラジウム・ガールズとは1917年頃ニュージャージー州オレンジの米国ラジウム工場で時計の文字盤を暗闇に光る発光ペイントしたために被曝した女性工場労働者たちのことである。
The Radium Girls were female factory workers who contracted radiation poisoning from painting watch dials with glow-in-the-dark paint at the United States Radium factory in Orange, New Jersey around 1917.
5人の女性たちは雇用主を訴え業務上疾病と個々の労働者の権利を確立した。
Five of the women challenged their employer in a court case that established the right of individual workers who contract occupational diseases to sue their employers.
1917年から1926年にかけて、かつてはラジウム・ルミナス・マテリアル社と呼ばれていた米国ラジウム社は、カーノット鉱石からラジウムを抽出・精製し、市場では “アンダーク”というブランド名で、発光塗料を販売することに従事していた。米国ラジウム社は防衛のための請負業者として軍にラジウム発光時計を供給する主要な企業だった。彼らのニュージャージーの工場では100人を越える主に女性の労働者たちが、その作業は安全だと信じて、ラジウムで光る時計の文字盤や機器をペイントしていた。
From 1917 to 1926, U.S. Radium Corporation, originally called the Radium Luminous Material Corporation, was engaged in the extraction and purification of radium from carnotite ore to produce luminous paints, which were marketed under the brand name ‘Undark’. As a defense contractor, U.S. Radium was a major supplier of radioluminescent watches to the military. Their plant in New Jersey employed over a hundred workers, mainly women, to paint radium-lit watch faces and instruments, believing it to be safe.

An estimated 4,000 workers were hired by corporations in the U.S. and Canada to paint watch faces with radium.
Many of the workers became sick. It is unknown how many died from exposure to radiation.

project UNDARKとは
暗闇の中で光を放つラジウム。かつてマリ・キュリーはそれを”妖精の光”と呼びました。
フランスパリのアンリ・ベクレルが1896年に放射線を発見してから115年、わたしたちは日本東京で2011年という年を迎えました。
これは、ラジウム・ガールズたちをはじめ、”光”の存在に翻弄されたひとりひとりに捧げる、Phewと小林エリカによるプロジェクトです。
project UNDARK is:
the Radium glowing in the dark. Also called “fairy’s light” by Marie Curie.
115 years after Henri Becquerel discovered Radium in Paris, France, we are now here in Tokyo, Japan in 2011.
Phew and Erika Kobayashi dedicates this project to the Radium girls and each and every one who had been affected by this “light”.
